We have observed this with mature loblolly pine and are having difficuly explaining it or find other papers that have shown the same response.
@ Kurt, in general nitrogen enhances shoot growth. In many instances it has been found that application of higher doses of nitrogen can reduce root growth , a similar effect was also noticed in lower doses of application, therefore, optimum doses application is very essential.
Actually meant to say increase coarse root growth. That ia what is puzzling me.
The use of ammonia fertilization can result in acidification of the root system. The acidification of the root system leads to solubilization of Aluminum which generates acid soil infertility one of the chief symptoms is blasting of the root tips greatly stunting the root system and overall growth.
