Can anybody suggest me the implementation of data mining techniques (especially decision tree) in the area of electrical engineering?
My PhD application had always been rejected by the university admission due to insufficient background study which is from electrical engineering. I am pursuing my PhD programme in Computer Science, because my research interest is in data mining. Is it possible for me to do research in this area in the Department of Electrical? What university if it is possible?

There are two possibilities,
1. If you have a defined problem statement for your work, then I would suggest to check if you can solve the problem in a better way if you get loads of data (about past failures in circuits etc.). If your answer is yes, then start collecting data. You can certainly apply decision trees to that data.
2. If your answer is no, then get a problem statement. Data mining is being ubiquitous, every field has it's applications, even farming. I think electrical engineering has also.
For 'pure' EE, I could think of only 1 application:
- data mining in power grid logging data. Which might reveal reasons and conditions for grid malperformance under 'certain' conditions.
But honestly:
EE is a large field. Why do you want to concentrate on data mining ? This is one of the fields like 'neuronal networks' and 'nanoscience' that hype to little avail.
I personally would love to see eg. figures for the efficiency of the same motor driven by field weakening vs. no-field-weakening approaches :) Sounds simple, but really isn't when done 'near-to-perfection'. Adding the EMC characterization data of both approaches might be worth a PhD. And surely would be a lot more useful than the umptieth 'big data mining' thesis with little outcome.
