According to the cell size or concentration during the red tides. There are some research papers do the competition experiments among different species, however, all of them do not explain why. I found that the ratio between species is difference in each paper. So I am confused how to do.
A meaningful competition experiment should start with a 1:1 ratio between the two species. The trickier question is 1:1 based on what measurement? Numerical abundance may be OK if the two species have similar cell size. If the two are very different in cell size, you may consider 1:1 based on cell carbon concentration. Also, a true 'competition' experiment assumes no allelopathic interactions between the two species (for example, via the production of toxins).
As per my knowledge in algal research, 1:2 will be better. why because most of the diatom has the long chain cells but whereas in the case of dinoflagellates are single cell producing toxin.
