I want to analyse heat transfer (thermal performance) in a wall. Should I go for mathematical modelling(MATLAB) or whether to go for experimental approach (Hot box method). Also thermal analysis can be done by computer stimulation. I am confused which one to prefer and why? If any research paper comparing this is there, suggest me?
Experimental approach is my take. You will be able to make your findings based on real variables and observations. I also think your mathematical simulation could help polish/guide your experiments.
What exactly are you trying to analyze? Is it the thermal conductivity (resistance) of the wall? Most of the information on the thermal properties of concrete, wooden or other common construction materials are readily available in the literature.
I think you should try both approaches. Using experimental approach you can assume the accuracy of mathematical model and calibrate it. Afterwards you can focus only on mathematical simulation e.g. with use of Monte Carlo simulation.
Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages. Neither is perfect. Take an approach or the other will depend on the purpose of the study.
If the materials are commonly used construction materials, i would stick to calculation. If not, for example if you want to determine the conductivity of a specific (insulation) material, you could go for the hot box. However, take in mind that you have to limit the amount of variables in order to increase reliability and processability of your data. Besides, if you want a normalized test, you need to stick to a specific standard. If not, your (self built?) hot box results will be only indicative. In that case, simulation might be equally reliable and maybe preferable in terms of convenience and ease. Depending on the complexity, you could use software like Bisco or Trisco, which is specifically meant for these kind of simulations (either 2D or 3D). Take a look at the url included.
