Independent Group Contingency is a strategy/method used in behavior madifaction. The theory is in a nut shell, by placing students into groups, through goup dynamics the group will begin to monitor themselves (namely behaviors) in quest of the reward. This all sounds good but I have and never will use a method/strategy. Why?
First issue, the reinforcer (the reward) is a field trip to...... and the lengh of time is a week before the field trip,and using independent group contingencyand some individuals one swiches groups the ups do meet the clearly defined behavioural goals. What does one do? Is the whole group denied the field trip, just those individual's? This is not just reguarding the individuals, what about the pressure it puts on the other members of the groups? Last it just smells and feels like bribery.
Second, once this method is started how do you stop? It places the class into groups for the school yesr or even if new groups are formed the class structure is groups the good groups are rewarded with reinforcers and the others not..
Third, say you are a fifth grade teacher and the only one using this method is it fair to the students, what about when they go to sixth grade and no rewards are given?
