After going to a lot of literature whose studies mainly on aerobic biological treatment successfully, a lot of gaps in the findings are there for anaerobic treatment technology of landfill leachate.
Moving-bed biofilm reactors and membrane bioreactors that are characterized by high power consumption, and for activated sludge plants, SBRs, and trickling filters for which strong control and maintenance requirements are typical. RBCs have low power consumption and, therefore, low operating costs, but relatively high initial costs and low performance.
What would be the best tech to be applied to optimize the landfill leachate treatment anaerobically??
I worked with an UASB-AF (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket + Anaerobic Filter) it worked quite well. Easy to operate with the usual control parameters for any anaerobic reactor and the main cost is to have the sludge blanket moving properly. I don't know if it is the "best tech", but it works (organic load removal and biogas production)
Anaerobic treatment could be suitable for landfill leachate if its salinity concentration is not higher than a limit value. Otherwise we will have inhibition phenomenon and then instability of the process.

Technologies for landfill leachate treatment include biological treatment, physical/chemical treatment and “emerging” technologies such as reverse osmosis (RO) and evaporation.
Biological leachate treatment is a proven technology for organics and ammonia removal in young and mature leachate. The anoxic/aerobic processes achieve nitrification and denitrification and reduce the oxygen demand for landfill leachate treatment.
Biological treatment methods include the activated sludge process (ASP), sequencing batch reactors (SBR), membrane bioreactors (MBR), aerobic lagoons and constructed wetlands. Physical-chemical treatment methods include oxidation, coagulation/flocculation, activated carbon, stripping, evaporation, filtration and RO. The choice of technology depends largely upon characteristics of the leachate, discharge limitations (e.g., direct or indirect discharge), and site constraints.
