Frequently we need to estimate leaf area, leaf length, leaf width and other associated characters of leaves of trees (upto 25-30cm length and 1-10 cm width). Presently I am having a lumens Visualizer 50 X simple camera mounted on a adjustable stand, which I am using to capture images. I wish to have a software which can be used for analyzing images captured by this visualizer or any digital camera. Please suggest.
If you want to measure leaf area, I recommend LeafByte. It's a free and open source app for iPhones and iPads. It measures leaf area and herbivory levels much more quickly than ImageJ and related software. It also automatically saves your data for you in a spreadsheet.

You might use Easy Leaf Area ( http://www.plant-image-analysis.org/software/easy-leaf-area) to estimate leaf area. I have used this free and open source software recently and I was quite happy with it. The app is available for smartphones and computers.

Zoe's answer is interesting and I'll look into LeafByte. I usually follow a procedure similar the one outlined here: http://prometheuswiki.org/tiki-index.php?page=Measuring+leaf+perimeter+and+leaf+area. ImageJ is definitely not fast, except if you have a standardized height of your camera that keeps the scale constant and you can batch process using a macro.
