I intend to conduct a case study using data collected from two previous case studies. Both the previous case studies were conducted by me, hence I have the complete data and protocols that I used. There isn't much available on use of secondary qualitative data for qualitative studies. Can anyone point me to similar studies conducted before? Is it even methodologically sound?
This is a fine question. Now, case study entails three components: vantage point, tools and the object. Another researcher may have looked at an object from his or her vantage point. You may come along and look at the same object from your vantage point. In so doing, you will pick empirics from the existing research. However, from your vantage point, you will make other observations (i.e. new empirics). That said, you should define your vantage point...and hopefully, the existing research defined the vantage point of the author. The tools will always come out in the writing. And the better writings will qualify their tools, noting the limits. In summary, yes you can draw on existing research.
