There is a scale with appropriate reliability index (Cronbach's alpha) 0.7 to 0.85.
The scale was run twice (1-2 months apart) on the same population, at first time (Cronbach's alpha was.53) and at the second time it was 0.7.
Please, what are the possible reasons, effect and suggestions?
You may have changes the combination of your items. When your alpha is .53 you have to delete some items so that you get at least .70. Check the order of your items. It may affect the value and also how many items you have combined, e.g., 3, 5 or 7?
It is not necessary to have same scores all the time; however, it should be close. setting, population, sample size, and time of introducing your test may induce some variations.
You mention same population, i don't know if you mean same individuals who were participated in first run? if you used same individuals; such action may cause biases due to problem of carryover (learning: they still memorize the questionnaire). I think its better to be used in same population but not same individuals who were participated in first run.
