If the material is brittle, presumably it is also linear elastic.

So, in my opinion, the simplest approach for a structural integrity assessment is to perform a linear elastic FE analysis, compute the max pricipal stress and compare it with the ultimate tensile strength (the yield stress does not exist if the material is brittle).  Failure will occur if max stress > UTS
