Thank you very much for this nice question. Obviously, BFT system can be conducted in earthen pond and concrete pond based system. I had found some papers on BFT, which were conducted in earten pond or concrete pond.There were some species such as tilapia, filter feeder carps and giant river prawn cultured in Bangladesh, China and Brazil or Mexico. Please find this paper from e-resources sources. The pond based BFT having enormous prospects in tropical and subtropical regions, but management will be be different than indoor system.

In my experience, waste management is easier with lainer.

On land, there are major requirements:
The first one: aeration and agitation to keep the flocs in suspension, it is an elementary principle that should not be forgotten.
For this, the choice of the aeration equipment is vital, on land we have applied well placed and oriented paddle aerators so that the water circulates, however I prefer the AirO2 injectors, because they provide a better mixing.

The second is the water velocity and the correct placement of the equipment, and that depends on the size and depth of the pond.
Both are used in BFT.
Remember that in BFT we must provide oxygen for the microorganisms throughout the system and the species to be cultivated.
Turbidity and solids are part of the system management, a major limitation in large ponds, so the carbon-nitrogen ratio must be adjusted, and the system must be matured very well before planting the fish in the pond.
