Both areas are truly related and they intersect in some aspects. For example, you may have several IoT devices and process the data generated using a Big Data framework. I don't think Big Data could be considered a subset of IoT. You can have Big Data without IoT as you may have one centralized source of data, which was not generated in a network of connected devices. 

The Internet of Things is a collection of devices, sensors and computing capabilities that enable intelligent command and control across vast regions, in an automated manner. A critical component in this ecosystem is data - data that is generated by these sensors and often sent to a centralized system (cloud or a gateway) for processing, data that is joined, processed, reasoned over at this central system, and data that is transmitted back to the devices/sensors to take actions. Given the enormous explosion in the number, type and capabilities of these sensors and devices, the total amount of data being processed can become very large (volume), heterogeneous (variety) and fast (speed) - all traits commonly referred to as belonging to big data.  In general, for IoT scenarios, it is important to have an efficient way to collect small amounts of data (at low power), transmit them in real time, process them in close to real time, and send back the results of this processing, again in real time. All of these activities place strict requirements on the performance of the systems handling these tasks.

The Internet of Things and Big Data are the buzz word which has taken the world by storm. It is believed by many that IoT or Internet of Thing is the next big thing and Big Data is something which is an eternal part of it.

However, many believe that they are different but, technically, both are two sides of the same coin. Whereas Internet of Thing is all about devices, connectivity, intelligent command and control in an automated manner, the Big Data is the data which is transferred using these devices and the work is performed when the centralized system assess this data.

If it could be explained in a simpler terms, then I would like to take an example here, suppose there is a parking management machine installed in your car, and you drive the car to the parking area, this parking management system assess the availability of space in that area and guides you to park your car without any delay.

Technically speaking, data is an integral part of the IoT. Microcontrollers are responsible for the functioning of IoT devices. They are the lifeline of IoT devices. It is via these that the data sent by the device is recognized and processed. The processing of data is done by the centralized system which is either cloud or gateway. After processing of data, the information for necessary action is sent back to the device to perform necessary action. 

So, it can be summed up that IoT or the Internet of Things are driven by data and when we talk in terms of size and scale of data then its classified as Big Data.
