Are various technology developments for automation in building construction really helping the practice or are there anything critical missing?
As a researcher working on various technologies for automating the building construction process, I have difficulties of identifying a "theory" for the domain of construction engineering and management, and want to hear from both technology developers, engineers and researchers about what are the critical body of knowledge of construction research, and which theoretical questions are critical to construction domain for effectively applying various technologies for addressing those theoretical issues.

The scope of Automation in Construction is broad, encompassing many stages through the construction life cycle from initial planning and design, to construction, operation and maintenance of the facility, and eventual dismantling and recycling of buildings and structures.
The journal of "Automation in Construction" published 2010 in UK is an International Research Organization which address all the phases regarding the use of Information Technologies in Design, Engineering, Construction Technologies, Maintenance and Management of Building Facilities. Excuse me, I am a undergraduate Quantity Surveying student who currently study on the automation and robotics in construction industry. However, I have some doubt about the 3D printing, is it considered as an automation in construction or robotics system ? Any clear example to classify the robotics system and automated system?

I believe the various developments when integrated to help construction and development industry can greatly expedite the process. For eg if GPS technology is used in sync with satellite imagery available at public sites like http://www.flashearth.com/ to map the daily progress at construction sites, it can greatly help conserve money and time spent on surveying and estimation.
