Stephen Hawking has shown us that ordinary people can participate in discussing advanced theoretical science in a great level of depth if the teacher is willing to facilitate the process from were the individual student is. This also is the case in philosophy. Read for example the dialogue Cratylus written by Plato and see how Socrates in an excellent way is able to guide Cratylus through a difficult reflection over the topic philosophy of language. Even children are able to follow and participate in advanced philosophical discussions if the teacher/facilitator/guide/mentor is willing to use a language and examples familiar to the participants. BA, MA and PHD students are all fully equipped for this. I have found great inspiration to how to accomplish this from Plato and others.
