Remote sensing may involve hyperspectral imaging and spectroscopy in both the microwave and ionizing radiation domain as well as active scatterometry to measure details of particulate type and distribution.

Insitu measurements may involve all of the above plus GCMS, optical microscopy and possibly some wet chemistry.
