We are reviewing presence of Xanthomonas oryzae in Russia and the former USSR, and found that some strains obtained originally as X. oryzae are X. campestris (MLST analysis), including strains from IRR got at late 1980, and from Japan at 1998. Is there any information about such atypical pathogens of rice?
Hi, there are certainly reports about Xanthomonas campestris as rice pathogen due to the fact that Xanthomonas oryzae was formerly called Xanthomonas campestris, among other names. These are trivial cases reflecting taxonomic issues over time.
More interestingly, I am not aware that "true" X.campestris can cause disease on rice. Which strains fro IRRI do you refer to? Which MLST scheme do you use? Did you re-inoculate you isolates and if so, do you observe symptoms?
Ralf, the strains from 1980-s were used for artificial inoculation in Lab and fields, I will check IRRI numbers, but all were isolated before 1986, Japanese strains came from West cost of Fukui, isolated by mysef, Current strains were obtained from seeds at 2012.
MLST was done after Young et al, 2008 + some genes from other publications +AFLP, all were grouped to X. campestris cluster. Other Russian & former USSR strains from rice were close to X. arboricola (in press). There is no true X. oryzae (X. campestris pv. oryzae or pv. oryzicola).
