I have fabricated a three-electrode electrochemical sensor (1×0.2mm) by FPCB method. An Au layer (about 100nm) was eletroplated onto the surface of the electrodes. I tried to electrodeposite glod nanoparticles onto the Au layer using HAuCl4, but I found the electrodes gradually turned to black (they were gold initially) after immerging them into 4 mmol/L HAuCl4 solution. Accordingly, I am wondering whether there were some reactions between Au and HAuCl4. On the other hand, it is interesting that the phenomenon can't be seen in a bigger similar sensor (15×2.5mm). I would really appreciate if there is anyone can show me the reason for this phenomenon.
