Has anyone used a writing service for grants? I sometimes get emails about these, and my gut instinct is that at best they are copy editors and at worse perhaps predatory scams. But perhaps I'm underestimating the value. Does anyone have any experience with a service like this?
Just saw this in passing and will answer in case it is still on your mind. A good content and technical editor is extremely valuable. This is especially true if language is a barrier or if your writing style has been noted by mentors or reviewers to be difficult, dense, or unclear. As for many things in careers, the best approach to finding reliable resources if to ask others if they have had good experiences with a particular editor and to request a referral. We have had faculty who have found some of the seminars and editors who advertise to be less than effective or extremely costly.
