I was wondering in which applications Al springs could be used. Usually the requirements for a spring material is a high Young modulus but aluminium has only E= 70 GPa. Compared with steel (E=210 GPa) the advantage of lower density of Al (2,7 to 7,8 g/cm³) seems not to predominate. Could anyone explain that to me? Also I want to know if magnesium springs would have a potential. Mg has even lesser density than Al (1,7 to 2,7 g/cm³), but also very low E (=45 GPa). Thanks in advance.
