I am working on putting together some material for an introductory biology course. I am working on incorporating material on scientific literacy and scientific writing. I have been trying to find a life sciences paper that is low on jargon, but is still a good demonstration of scientific writing. The target students are freshmen undergrads with minimal exposure to scientific literature and writing.
Do you have any recommendations for publications that are relatively modern (not from before 1990) that are fairly straightforward for students to understand? I hope to be able to walk students through the process of reading a scientific paper, but it will hopefully be approachable enough for them to do it on their own.
I have struggled to find an approachable paper and would greatly appreciate any input you might have.

I do not believe there is a single document that meets the requirements you want. I recommend you to detect the state of scientific culture in your students through a survey and then select a set of appropriate materials.
That is the way I have followed, incorporating history and epistemology into teaching

My advice would be to select a paper (regardless of jargon etc.) that explains a topic in your curriculum well (perhaps one you've used to set your material) and make it available to the class, ask them to read it, and schedule a discussion class to discuss it's findings and what their take away was. Not only will the students be exposed to scientific writing but it may also highlight where the gaps in understanding lie.
