Without knowing the exact nature of your thesis, I would suggest the environment; prevention of pollution, sustainable resource, climate change, protection of the environment, or labour practices; employment and relationships, conditions of work and social protection, health and safety at work, or consumer issues: protecting consumer's health and safety, sustainable consumption, consumer data protection and privacy. Each of these topics would synergise with Government policy and Corporate Governance and CSR.

When do we start to focus on Business SR instead of Corporate SR ? So much so that any business - small or big , corporate or not, does business for more social value.

It will depend on your aims AFTER completing your doctorate. If you are aiming for an academic career, current job vacancies in your area (available here on Researchgate) and your masters literature review should help point the way towards the sub-topics in demand.

Otherwise if you seek a career in industry or practice, you could use your doctorate to develop some practical ideas, tools or models appropriate to CSR and corporate governance. At least then you would hit the job market with something concrete to offer (which is a shortcoming with many PhD candidates).

The latter is my area of specialism where I use the internal audit and risk management functions to improve corporate governance. Consider looking the co-evolution of the need for legitimacy and CSR. In the 1950s corporations could safely state that the business of business is business -- today, such a statement would be corporate suicide. The change in corporate attitude is driven by changes in social attitude -- not governments (who 10,000 years ago evolved from hill bandits and have never forgotten their roots). Given that most famine in the world is driven by incompetent and thieving governments, letting governments drive the CSR agenda is risky.

I think you link up your CSR and gender of say Women directors in corporate boardrooms. or as managers in organisations that encourage CSR because if their nature as mothers Who takes care of the entire family's upkeep.

To suit developing economies, Visser (2006) made a modification to the order (layers ) of Carroll's CSR Pyramid. You can test this if your research is in a developing country. You have to go to a sample of large companies in your country, and ask them how much budget they spend for economic, legal, ethical, and discretionary (philantrophic) responsibilities.

Friend and PhD student in University of Ottawa's School of International Development and Global Studies, Saoussane Rifai, is currently researching the roles of women in CSR. Perhaps there are some interesting overlaps with your potential work.

Shanika Fregiste I would like to suggest you look at the depth of the CSR - that is the real reason for the CSR activities conducted. Some companies are using the CSR activities as a publicity stunt or greenwashing (that is to cover up their current environment destroying activities for example) . You may want to see on how the government is actually regulating CSR to prevent GREENWASHING. Good luck!

I would suggest looking into the real meaning of CSR, today's elite organizations are more socially concerned with the same elites in history. Are these organizations really making any difference or doing CSR just for tax saving or for increasing their goodwill value. Also, do homo sapiens really understand that the environment is on the verge of collapse. Try to choose the topic which can fulfill your purpose of life. Don’t do a Ph.D. just for the sake of degree, do this for fulfillment. Also, check the statistics about data-driven rules which are anyhow coming, designed for common men or for all. Some topics are listed hereunder:

1. Is the UN doing its job in making CSR visible for homo sapiens?

2. Are elite organizations really lost their foundation purpose of CSR?

3. What is the exemplary contribution to saving mother earth?

I have not done a literature review in this area yet. But these thoughts had been in my mind since I saw your question.

Some thoughts I want share are :

1) One hypothesis could be, Higher CSR Index , the better the overall corporate governance index ((other things remaining the same)as that may drive an organisational culture to a more authentic engagement or purpose intense/aligned enterprise. 2) CSR orientation of the company and its stock prices , are they co-related ((other things remaining the same) ? 3) Consumers may perceive and value brands which they consider are high on CSR Index ranking ? If so the gross revenue might go up (other things remaining the same) and can give better market share.

• Accounting and disclosure.
• Corporate Social Responsibility and CG in a particular context.

Corporate governance incorporating the principles of corporate social responsibility and meeting the principles of business ethics creates a good, positive atmosphere at work and development of corporate employees, and can be an important factor in the company's mission and business success. From the data analyzed and published for many years, it appears that in enterprises operating in developed economies, the improvement of corporate governance standards and compliance with the principles of corporate social responsibility is growing. Business counterparties and consumers are increasingly aware of this issue. Therefore, enterprises also add to their missions and development strategies issues indicating the improvement of corporate governance standards and compliance with the principles of corporate social responsibility. In addition, an interesting topic is the issue of raising the standards of corporate social responsibility, corporate governance, good governance and business ethics and the achieved financial results functioning in a particular organization, company, institution, etc. In the situation of researching this issue in capital companies whose securities are listed on the stock exchange, an interesting topic of scientific research may be the analysis of functioning, applied standards in the field of corporate social responsibility, corporate governance, good governance and business ethics principles and financial results, development , a change in the market share in the sale of products and services, a change in the image of the mission and brand of the company in the minds of consumers and business contractors, as well as a change in the valuation of securities issued by the examined economic entity on specific stock exchange markets. Another interesting research issue is adding to the above-mentioned examples of correlation analysis the issues of implementation of sustainable development principles, including the possibility of implementing the principles of sustainable development principles into economic processes implemented by a specific economic entity and examining the relationship between these principles and issues of corporate social responsibility, corporate governance, and good governance and business ethics. Another issue that may be an interesting topic of scientific research is the analysis of legal norms functioning in a given country enabling, motivating, shaping the use of corporate social responsibility, corporate governance, good governance, business ethics principles, and principles of sustainable development in specific types of business entities, including SME sector companies, in corporations, in financial and public institutions. This type of research should result in specific recommendations for the amendment of legal norms, which will increase the possibility and scale of motivating business entities and institutions to apply corporate social responsibility, corporate governance, good governance, business ethics, sustainable development principles as part of conducted business and other activities.
