A number of roundup ready varieties of sugarcane are under cultivation in many countries. These are primarily cultivated as an instrument to manage weeds effectively. However, being a genetically modifies entity these may have different rhizospheric behaviour. Is there any research finding regarding this?
Practically there shouldn't be any significant effect on soil fauna with application of glyphosate.There are two reasons for this.To best of my knowledge,round up is having only systemic translocation in green tissues and effective only if absorbed by green foliage.Secondly this chemical has no effect if it falls on ground owing to relatively less persistence.Since soil activity is trivial, therefore too much effect on fauna dynamics is not expected.However weed flora under such fields will definitely have a effect esp weeds which emerge after one month of application of Round up may become over dominant in absence of any intercultural operations.But this will hold true only for long term sequential application.
