I'm currently doing my BEng in manufacturing engineering but am moving to do a masters in energy systems come September. While I am looking forward to the course, I am a little stuck for inspiration as most of my ideas are lacking in complexity.
I'm just curious to see what kinds of topics come from asking this, if any.

Cybersecurity of Power and Energy Systems is a topic with many questions yet to be answered. This research area is roughly 50% on computer science and 50% on power and energy systems.
Also, Power Quality of Energy Systems with High Penetration of Renewable Energy is another important area with many unanswered questions.
Technical, Economical and Environmental Assesment of Green Distributed Generation like PV Solar technology, wind energy, PV / Thermal, .........etc.
Performance Analysis of any type of Renewable Energy with high potential, U need to introduce it in your country.
Worldwide millions of sensors and sensor modules are added to the I(I)oT and have to be powered. If you want to put a sensor everywhere you need a very small independent power supply. Develop a specific power supply with energy harvesting that replaces regular batteries (e.g. replace 2 AA batteries/yr with solar/wind).
