Dear colleagues! Could anyone recommend any reliable histories of Oriental studies? Presenting the evolution of Western knowledge about Asia (and / or Africa), especially historical / social / political knowledge, and acquainting the reader with most prominent researchers and approaches. There is hardly a comprehensive history, but there does exist some research on:
• the national / religious traditions of Oriental learning like Marchand S.L. German Orientalism in the Age of Empire (2009) or Xavier A.B., Županov I.G. Catholic Orientalism (2015);
• the traditions of studying a certain Asian country or region like Mackerras C. Western Images of China (1989) or Maillard C. L'Inde vue d'Europe (2008);
• certain institutions like Singaravélou P. L' École française d'Extrême-Orient (1999) or Brown I. The School of Oriental and African Studies (2016).
I am interested in the whole period of the West studying the East, that is at least since the time of Guillaume Postel (the 16th century) to the present. I would be grateful for your suggestions of any books in English, French, German, Dutch or Italian.
