This specimen was caught as by-catch during a pelagic krill trawl in the Bransfield Strait, Antarctica. Can anyone give me an idea as to what it may be?
Good morning everyone, thank you Mateusz and Shannon. Alber, it had no shell and was soft bodied similar to a nudibranch. Thank you for your interest and help everyone.
I caught a very similar looking creature in that area. When in a tank of seawater it swam around and appeared to be a type of gymnosome pteropod. Here's the best picture I could find on google:
It is very similar to a photograph of Clione limacina (Phipps, 1774) in W. Engl (2012) "Shells of Antarctica". As already Shannon 3 days ago suggested, it could be Clione.
Clione anctartica Smith E.A., 1902 is a synonym of Clione limacina (Phipps, 1774).
I recently came across an untypical picture of Clione limacina on the webpages "www.zooplankton.no" (attachment). It seems partly like the stage of body withdrawal, where it is capable of retracting the body-tail, wings, and head.
Comparing Your Picture to this specimen I would say it could be C. limacina.
