I can first suggest you consider a Soft-Ware Defined receiver,

which requires a Computer to run the soft-ware.

I work with Amateur Radio equipment, but not directly with SDR. 

The SDR type receiver is typical for the current generation of rigs.

Some SDR transceivers are designed to be stand-alone.

Some SDR transceivers are designed to operate with a P.C. computer.
