Please see the link below of a recent news article wherein Alibaba chairman is reported to have made this statement. He is pointing to an interesting pattern in history. But, is the statement oversimplified? Technology does play a role in shaping a society, its economy and polity, but can technology take complete control of a society and dictate terms?

Technology may be defined as power of man over matter. Technology does impact a society in non-intuitive way sometimes. Information technology is one such technology which has affected human society in unpredictable way. World wars are emergent phenomenon. A number of factors must come together under certain conditions to trigger what we call world war. Technology could be one of those factors. But, it does not seem to be a determining factor.
