AI Literacy is the No. 1 Skill Employers Want Right Now

Due to the ever-increasing demand for AI literacy in workplaces, it is high time that we take a timely look into how AI is reshaping the workplace, how employers are responding, and what they expect from higher education to build an AI-ready workforce.

The AI in the Workplace 2025 report found that

·  63% of employers reported AI as game-changing or very helpful in boosting productivity

·   72% of employers believe that AI adoption will lead to reductions in headcount

·   62% expect AI to create new roles in the job market

·  The top two barriers to AI adoption in the workplace — lack of governance and training — and the opportunities this presents for higher education

· A sharp disconnect between industry and higher education: only 3% of employers believe higher education is adequately preparing graduates for an AI-driven future.

AI should be considered as a productivity tool; it is a great tool to get feedback and suggestions to improve our work and ensure we haven't missed something important. Nevertheless, we will still need human creativity to drive our work and make decisions; AI is there only to assist us, not to replace us. Ultimately, we are the ones thinking critically about the outputs, synthesizing everything, and figuring out what to act on using our human intellect and ingenuity. However, we also should learn how to teach ourselves how to run AI, how to ask AI the right questions, and how to think critically about the AI tools and technologies that we choose to use as tools and software. We would be so blessed to have these AI skills, because it will drive us to explore new possibilities with AI, and we would be able to apply these AI literacy and skills anywhere – in any sectors, disciplines, and industries.
