I would suggest you to understand the basic concepts first (you can find alot of material regarding this on internet). Also you must have some data in hand before taking a start (data can be yours or secondary data from already published literature). ANN and GEP are the most common techniques used in Civil Engineering and you can goto www.sciencedirect.com and give these keywords.

civil structure means construction? if so you have to build system or model which need less human intervention with highly automated in your application.

eg if any work done civil engineering with help of certain tools for building certain, for this example can you integrate work of tools in automation highly and also can tool able to learn from his old activities (Machine learning), in its repeated task it can able to make decision without help of human then its great innovation for your field. try something from scratch. try to innovate by integrating things like this.then possible to do something useful with AI. but in AI you need technique highly depends on mathematical model of learning.

As per my knowledge whatever in your civil engineering concept try to work for full automation of task with computing technologies.

Then try to add certain features, for just certain concern application which you trying to build need to work on by learning from it's own. Like application doing r performing some task first time that data need to taken as knowledge for next time activity.

Means human decision not required application can decide it from it's past activity learning.

This learning happens when you made your application fully able to understand all perceived all knowledge from it's. Something like feedback system in loop.

So this is possible if you do this very low level concept with good accuracy of the output.

Then try big concepts.

Without programming knowledge or some computing language experts can't implement it.

Machine learning and deep learning, AI learning technique all basic required to understand how to correlate your requirement with Civil engineering.
