Trying to understand the average time taken for the candidate to be called do defend his/her thesis at various universities in different countries.

There is hard and fast rule in this regard. It depends on the working system of the University, the time of external examiner, the quality of the thesis submitted,and to some extent the discipline of the research work. After saying this, one year should be considered the maximum and tolerable time.
