You should be glad that the change in material structure did not affect the performance of adsorbent. And why - it depends on the changes made. Only physicochemical studies of the adsorbent surface can give an answer.

I modified the adsorbent to improved the ability to adsorption. but according to the opinion of the referee, the rigidity of the new adsorbent was decreased. he wants to know why the new adsorbent show better performance while the rigidity was decreased (giving some theoretical evidence).
the increase on the performance of an adsorbent is directly related to increase on the effective interactions between adsorbent and adsorbed matters.
The decrease in rigidity while maintaining the performance (or higher performance) may have been due to variations in the pore structure, in particular the increase in the porosity of the adsorbent particle and increase in specific surface.
