Data science is an emerging field that requires creative applications of math, statistics, programming, and understanding of social sciences.
I think (even if don't have empirical evidence other than my knowledge of the sector) that a smart mathematician would be able of reconverting herself into a successful data scientist. However, in order to do so, she will need self-directed learning on matters like social sciences (economics, marketing, demographics, behaviour, etc.) and statistics.
As Daniel Doss has already pointed out there is no dearth for careers that a mathematics grad can have.
Data scientists and Big Data Professionals are highly sought after these days. Most of them have statistical or mathematical background. In addition to the number crunching skills, logical and analytical skills that you may already possess, you should get skilled in advanced analytical tools and methodologies like data mining, modeling and be skilled in SAS, R, Python, SQL etc. The business value of consumer data is only going to grow and I can definitely see more demand there in coming years.
Dear Shahul, If your post graduation is in pure mathematics, there is no opportunity or use of the subject other than academic jobs-teaching/research. If your post graduation is in applied mathematics, you shall model and solve some problems in some career options.But for that you need at least a certificate course to enter in that field. Example -To become Data Scientist , you need to know softwares like R, statistics etc. But most of the Professors may say to you there are huge opportunities after MSc Maths.Thats just to protect their positions.
