Corona virus pandemic “accelerating” in Africa, World Health Organization says
The number of Covid-19 cases in Africa has doubled in less than 20 days and the World Health Organization (WHO) is warning of a shortage of test kits.
“It took 98 days to reach the first 100,000 cases and only 19 days to move to 200,000 cases, so even though these cases in Africa account for less than 3% of the global total, it's clear that the pandemic is accelerating,” WHO Africa director Matshidiso Moeti said Thursday during a press briefing.
There are currently more than 200,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and 5,000 deaths on the continent, he said.

From a healthcare system perspective, most of the countries in Africa are among the most susceptible nations in the world. Nonetheless, I see some factors e.g. a relatively young population, and a general low population density outside of major cities and some other exceptions which could be beneficial in preventing a full-scale pandemic.
May be you are right dear Sascha Terlecki and another might be due to inadequate testing and under reporting. When I worked in Africa I saw the high prevalence of TB, HIV, Malaria too and it's actually not matched with their socioeconomic status and may be a time bomb waiting to explode as they can not afford to maintain lockdown too to save their economy. WHO thinks so.
