With the advent of advanced framing, builders are encoraged to use advanced framing to frame the timber structure. Although this method is more cost efficient (less material and low labor cost), still many builders are using convetional framing. I was wondering that:
1 - what criteria makes builders to choose one of these framing methods?
2 - what are the prons and cons of Advanced Framing Vs Conventional Framing?
Well I'm not an expert on timber structures but for the 1st question I think I can give you a good answer. The main criterion that builders choose conventional framing is experience since they know from past work that this kind of framing "works". You should also consider the fact that builders don't have the knowledge an engineer has, since their work is kind of an "art" that they learn through working over time. Besides choosing between conventional & advanced framing the factors that should be considered (e.g. building use, seismicity) influence the analysis and the design of the structure and that's a desicion an engineer makes not the builder which varies depending on the structure requirements.
1- Advanced framing, also known as optimum value engineering (OVE), is a system of construction framing techniques designed to optimize material usage and increase energy efficiency.
2- Structural integrity, energy efficiency, waste reduction are among the advantages of advanced framing.
Indeed the advanced framing method, combined with continuous wood structural panel sheathing, delivers builders with a solution: a cost-effective framing system that will produce more energy-efficient homes without compromising the strength or durability of the structure. These key advantages of advanced framing help produce energy-efficient, structurally sound homes with lower material and labor costs than conventionally framed houses. Structures built with advanced framing techniques are more resource efficient and offer more space for cavity insulation than similar structures built with conventional framing.

I totally agree with you but I can not understant why most of the builders they are still using conventional framing rather than advanced framing. Is it because the builders are not familiar with this technique or may be because it is harder to frame building per advanced framing?
We are working with 20 different construction firms, just one of them uses advanced framing and that’s surprising for me.
