I am wondering if anyone knows of a source for results of current weather prediction models run on the data from past years? We are looking at realistically simulating a range of future weather events based on past data but what would really help would be a database of weather forecasts based on the known conditions from a historical record which could then be compared against the weather which actually occurred. I assume researchers who build weather forecast models must generate this kind of data for validation, does anyone know of a public dataset of this kind?

I don't know of archives for exactly what you are asking for. I have two possible suggestions that might partially fill your need. First, the ECMWF reanalysis products do provide the short-range (hours) forecast fields over many years. You can find that data on the ECMWF data portal site, and you just have to select the forecasts and not the analysis.
Second, there is a project called Transpose AMIP (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/tamip/) that initializes climate models from ECMWF analyses to run sets of 5-day forecasts. The data from TAMIP is available in the same way as the CMIP5 models, pcmdi9.llnl.gov. NWP models/centers have been invited to participate in TAMIP, but so far I don't think any of them have submitted data.
