This paper gives examples of how bio-inspired routing is different from DSR and AODV, and it shows how the authors modeled their ant colony-derived protocol for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET). They call it "rational swarm." Should be applicable to VANET too, I would expect.

The main difference with classic routing is that the solutions change constantly, not just after connectivity ceases.
