Acceleration voltage in MALDI mass spectrometers is mostly 18 or 20 kV. Will such high voltages not cause fragmentation of molecular ions?

It is established that intact molecular mass can be determined by MALDI for macromolecules, say up to ~ 100 kDa. But, my doubt is, how molecular ions are able to withstand such high (acceleration)...
