Was Bouma's original work on turbidites (1962), the Eocene-Oligocene flysch of the Peira-Cava area, within a deep-marine or deep-lacustrine setting?

Was the original work completed on marine or lacustrine deep-water systems? I have read a number of publications that suggest the area was a deepwater, marine basin. But nothing conclusive so far....
