What would be the most suitable conditions when dealing with degenerate primers?

I am using degenerate primers for amplifying viral genome. At the beginning, the bands appeared at appropriate size but now nothing appears except for unspecific bands.

I continuously get a smear or sometimes no band with amplified viral cDNA.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
