How we can increase the stability of chitosan in acidic solution without adding cross-linker like glutaraldehyde?

I want to use chitosan as an adsorbent in the acidic solution by maintaining its stability. Using cross-linker decreases adsorption capacity also glutaraldehyde is toxic!
