Can anybody tell me the theory and methodology for how source time function (moment tensor rate functions) is arrived at for an earthquake?

For example I have recent earthquake recorded data for Chile in 2014. Now how do I go forward to obtain the source time functions for each subfault and thereby for the entire subfault?
