Person/human detection: what is out there apart from image processing?

Human detection is mostly done via image processing of video/camera data. I'm searching for simpler and more direct solutions e.g. passive infrared or electromagnetic fields.

Person/human detection: what is out there other than image processing, e.g., passive infrared, electromagnetic field?

Most literature uses processing of video/cam images. I would need a simpler solution, also need to avoid ethical issues due to videoing people.
