Does the distance between two wireless nodes affect the throughput in ns2?

Hi, in my simulation when i change the distance between 2 wireless nodes the throughput does not change. For a big distance it becomes Zero. I mean that the throughput has either a value or zero....

I have used ns2.31 to simulate ieee 802.11a and the maximum throughput was 20.9 Mbps, is this value correct or there is a higher value can be achived?
