How could we know that we are synthesizing core shell quantum dots instead of dopped quantum dots or only quantum dots?

if we are synthesizing ZnSe/ZnS core shell quantum dots there is a chance of getting only ZnS,ZnSe or ZnSSe (zns quantum dots with se dopped). Then how could we characterize it?
