What effect would using a caustic or acid to neutralize a phosphate buffer formulated with a single salt have on the effectiveness of the buffer?

For instance, using HCl to achieve a neutral pH of a dibasic phosphate salt solution -- would the buffering chemistry be different enough to affect the capacity over time of a protein solution?
