What are the ways in which a neural network can be trained with an image and made to recognise the same?

I know that each pixel of an image can be fed as an i/p to a multi layer feed forward net and trained the same using back propagation, I would like to know the other methods that could be employed.

Here y can be assumed as a function of any independent variable ! I want the differentiate its present value of f(x(n)) with respect to its past value f(x(n-1)
