What is the working principle of Buffer layer(ZnO, AlO2 etc.) in Solar cells?

We all know that Buffer layers are used to aid the solar cell efficiency. But I want to know exactly how does Buffer layer do that? Like I need an answer/explanation like the way depletion region...
