Can superparamagnetic nanoparticles really be taken out of dispersion by a hand held magnet?

I have seen many demonstrations in lectures where people dragged around slurries of sludges of superparamagnetic "nanoparticles" with a small hand held magnet. I have never seen that nanoparticles...
