Are pot experiments in 40 cm high pots with soil surface 20-30 cm possible?

Dear colleagues  I wonder if is possible to do the pot experiment in 40 cm high pots with 20-30 cm soil surface? Do you have any articles which confirm this idea? Many thanks for answers
