In the study of hydrological cycle, does deuterium excess (d-excess) has any advantages over oxygen-18 or deuterium?

I just know d-excess is used to trace moisture source conditions (RH, temperature etc. Any other advantages (in atmosphere, surface or subsurface water cycle)?
